From Polar to Arctic Circle

I first wrote the strip, when working as a waitress in New Jersey in 1992. It was called Polar Circle then and the characters were a little different too, though the three immigrant penguins, snow bunny and polar bear were there from the beginning.

Polar Circle was put on ice for a few years when I quit waitressing to work in clinical research. It was resurrected briefly in collaboration with a fellow cartoonist, Paul Cemmick, in 2002. Paul got busy with other projects, but made some good suggestions, including changing the name to Arctic Circle.

It wasn't until 2005 that Arctic Circle first appeared in print, in the Australian Regional Press. After its ten week guest slot, I had enough material to submit it to the syndicates. I heard from King Features when James Kemsley (cartoonist for Ginger Meggs) passed it on to them via their Australian representative, Ian Dale.

The Editor-in-Chief at the time, Jay Kennedy, emailed me to say he was interested in the strip once improvements had been made to the lettering and a development deal was signed in November 2006.

There were very few changes made to the characters in development. The major one was removing Howard's impressive camouflage, which used to make him invisible outside. Jay thought that this would be confusing to a reader unfamiliar with the strip. Jay also commented that he liked the fact that the penguins were the same but for their different [feather] styles. I had actually given them different beaks too, but realised that that wasn't necessary.

Comics Editor, Brendan Burford, worked with me to bring the strip into syndication and it was released on August 27th 2007.
